About Hanami Koji

A charming street that runs from north to south through the center of Gion.

Details

Hanami Koji is the main thoroughfare that runs north to south through Gion, from Sanjo to Kenninji Temple. Although its name means "small path," the wide road is lined with many shops, and the elegant street is always visited by numerous tourists. Particularly in the area south of Shijo Street, the old charm of the former teahouse district is still preserved. Originally, the teahouses located on Shijo Street and to the north all gathered to the south during the Meiji to Taisho periods, forming the current streetscape. "Irikitei," located at the corner of Shijo Street and Hanami Koji, appears in the Kabuki play "Kanadehon Chūshingura" and has been used by many dignitaries as a high-class teahouse. Along the way from here to Kenninji Temple, there are numerous teahouses, ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurants), cafes, and restaurants, and further ahead is the Gion Kobu Kabuki practice hall where "Miyako Mai" is performed. The surrounding alleys are filled with many shops, exuding charm, but photography is prohibited in many areas, so it is recommended to observe etiquette while sightseeing. Although there are some buildings and apartments on the north side of Shijo Street, the area from Hanami Koji to the vicinity of Takumi Bridge, which leads into Shirakawa Street, is now designated as a traditional building preservation area and is very popular as a spot where one can experience the atmosphere of Gion.

Highlights

There are rental shops for costumes where you can experience dressing up as a Maiko. You can see Maiko walking along the streets, but taking photos is considered impolite. Photography is prohibited on the private roads around Hanamikoji, so please be mindful.
