Mount Haruna stands majestically on the northern side of the Kanto Plain in central Gunma Prefecture. Together with Mount Akagi and Mount Myogi, it is known as the "Upper Mau Mountains," and is one of the representative peaks of Gunma Prefecture. The Ikaho Onsen, located on the western side, is believed to originate from the volcanic hot springs of Mount Haruna. Formed by volcanic activity, Lake Haruna (1,100 meters) is surrounded by an outer ring of mountains, with the highest peak being Mount Kamebu. The inner volcano, Mount Haruna Fuji, is impressive in its grandeur. At the lakeside, there is the Haruna Ropeway that connects to the summit of Mount Haruna, from which one can overlook the breathtaking views of the Chichibu, Tanigawa mountain range, and Mount Akagi.
Located at the southwestern foot of the mountain, the Haruna Shrine (榛名神社), said to have been established in the 6th century, is renowned for its efficacy in prayers for good fortune and business prosperity, and has recently become a popular spot for spiritual connection. Entering the precincts through the Suijin Gate, visitors can walk along the approach path, where they can see magnificent buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties, statues of the Seven Lucky Gods, the sacred site of ascetics, and the Yatate Cedar, where Takeda Shingen shot an arrow during the Yatate no Shinji to pray for victory on the battlefield, before passing through the Shoryumon to arrive at the shrine hall. Behind the shrine hall stands the sacred rock, Mikageiwa, which enshrines the deity.
