Details
Takayama Old Town, as a representative ancient town of the Hida Takayama region, is a popular tourist destination in Gifu Prefecture, still retaining the old streetscapes from the Edo period. The town is lined with charming, traditional shops on both sides of the street; the entire street is adorned with noren (traditional fabric dividers) that exude an old-world charm, creating a captivating scene filled with Japan's original landscapes. Rows of machiya (townhouses) preserve the traditional style featuring lattice windows, known in Japanese as "degoriko," allowing visitors to feel the rich historical atmosphere and traditional culture. Additionally, there are sake cellars, coffee shops converted from old houses, and grocery stores, making it highly recommended to stroll and carefully appreciate the beautiful scenery of the old town.
There are many small eateries in Takayama Old Town offering takeout, where you can taste local specialties like Hida beef buns and Hida beef sushi. The sake from the Takayama region is also quite famous, with many shops displaying a large ball made of cedar leaves, known as "sakebari," at their entrances, which serves as a sign of sake breweries. It is highly recommended for those who enjoy drinking not to miss out.
As for enjoying a stroll through the old town, in addition to wearing a yukata while walking around, taking a rickshaw tour is also highly recommended. The knowledgeable rickshaw pullers enthusiastically share little stories about various attractions in the old town, as well as must-visit spots throughout the entire Takayama region. Takayama Old Town has a cool climate in summer and a romantic snowy landscape in winter, making it a great destination to visit all year round.
