Hitachi City Kanmune Zoo opened in Showa 32 (1957) and is located in a flat, expansive hilly area overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The zoo is home to over 100 species of animals, totaling 540 individuals, including elephants, monkeys, bears, tigers, and rhinoceroses.
Here, visitors can observe various animals up close. Among them, the Asian elephants "Mineko" and "Suzuko," born in Myanmar, are the stars of the zoo, along with adorable Humboldt penguins, majestic lions, and the popular South American capybaras loved by children.
One of the highlights is the "Reptile House," which gathers snakes, lizards, crocodiles, and turtles in one area. The central hall of the building features a high exhibition space adorned with various tropical plants, showcasing the animals' natural habitats through unique display methods, allowing visitors to see reptiles roaming among the plants.
Additionally, in 2020, the "Japanese Macaque Plaza" was opened, centered around a tower-like play structure approximately 7 meters high. In 2021, the "Red Panda House" was rebuilt, adding to the charm of the zoo, which has a history of 60 years.

Getting There
Take the Ibaraki Kotsu bus from JR Joban Line Hitachi Station (from the Central Exit, at Bus Stop No. 2) for about 10 minutes, and get off at Kamimine Park Entrance. It’s about a 3-minute walk from there.
