About Hizen Nagoya Castle Ruins (Nagoya Castle Museum)
Experience the castle selected by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified Japan, as a base for invading Korea through VR.
Details
Nago Castle, also known as "Hizen Nago Castle," was built as a base for the military campaign led by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the invasions of Korea (Imjin War) in the Sengoku period. It is said that construction began in the 19th year of Tenshō (1591) and was completed in just a few months. Over 150 barracks were also constructed in the surrounding area to accommodate daimyō from all over the country. From the outbreak of war in the first year of Bunroku (1592) until the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the retreat of the daimyō seven years later, the castle served as a military base for the invasion of the Korean Peninsula.
The ruins of the castle and the barracks are considered one of the largest castle complexes in Japan and have been designated as "Nago Castle Ruins and Barracks." The museum adjacent to the castle ruins provides a diverse range of exhibits that offer insights into the castle's overview and the historical exchanges between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean Peninsula.
Additionally, there is a tablet that recreates Hizen Nago Castle from about 430 years ago in VR, which can be borrowed for free. The interior structure of the building comes to life before your eyes, allowing you to move through the virtually recreated three-dimensional space, providing an immersive experience akin to traveling through a time tunnel. Furthermore, the museum's gift shop offers souvenirs such as castle charms and original versions of castle stamp books.
