🗺️ Hozu River Rafting

The Hozu River boat ride from Kameoka to Arashiyama is a famous floating attraction in Kyoto. Passengers board a small flat-bottomed boat on the Hozu River, which flows down from the Tanba Highlands, and drift downstream along the current. The drifting route is approximately 16 kilometers long and takes about 2 hours. The boat is steered by three skilled boatmen, allowing tourists to experience a journey that weaves through rocky gaps and rushes down the rapids. Originally developed in the early Edo period to transport timber and fuel from Tanba to Kyoto, the waterway includes sections with swift currents and splashing water. In the calmer areas of the river, the boatmen introduce the history of Hozu River drifting and the surrounding features, allowing passengers to enjoy the rich natural scenery, including the continuous mountains and the unique boulders along the banks. The journey also crosses the JR San'in Main Line, running alongside the sightseeing train that connects Kameoka and Arashiyama, making the 2-hour boat ride an engaging experience. Additionally, passengers can drift down the Hozu Gorge while admiring the cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and autumn leaves. In winter, there are also boat services, and the snowy landscape of the valley is particularly beautiful. Regular shared boat services (from March 10 to December 12) operate on a same-day ticket basis, with reservations available for groups of 10 or more. Winter boat services (from December 13 to March 9) can be reserved in advance for as few as one person.
