About Ibaraki Yumoto Onsen Town

Opened during the Nara period, the historic Koyu Onsen has a long history.

Details

It is said that the hot spring was opened during the Nara period (approximately 710-794 AD) and is known as one of the "Three Ancient Springs of Japan," along with Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture and Dogo Onsen in Ehime Prefecture. It gushes out 5 tons of hot spring water per minute from about 50 meters underground, boasting one of the largest spring outputs in the world. The water is a rare type in Japan, classified as "sulfur sodium chloride spring and sulfate spring." It is popular for its beautifying effects known as "Bijin-yu" (美人湯) and "Shinzō-yu" (心臓の湯), which can help improve high blood pressure, along with various other benefits. Located on the mountain side of JR "Yumoto" Station, the hot spring town has about 20 accommodation facilities. Facing the sea and enjoying a warm climate, Iwaki City is a treasure trove of gourmet food, attracting many repeat visitors who come to enjoy the famous hot springs and exquisite cuisine. In the hot spring town, there is a free "Tsuru no Ashiyu" (鶴の足湯) and three public bathhouses, making it possible to enjoy a soak even on a day trip. Other attractions worth visiting include the representative shrine of Yumoto Onsen, "Onsen Shrine" (温泉神社), facilities for exploring new knowledge about the ancient world, and the Iwaki City Coal and Fossil Museum "HORURU."
