About Ibusuki Onsen

Enjoy the world-renowned "Ibusuki Sand Bath" at a hot spring resort with over 1,000 sources.

Details

The city of "Ibusuki," located at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, has a unique landscape formed by volcanic eruptions. It is said that there are over 1,000 hot spring sources within the city, making it a hot spring resort with a rich supply of geothermal water. In addition to enjoying the regular hot springs, Ibusuki's most distinctive feature is the world-rare "sand bath." The sand on the coast is heated by the hot springs to around 55°C. Wearing a yukata, visitors bury their bodies in the sand, and within just 10 minutes, they can experience the miraculous sensation of sweating profusely. After detoxing to the sound of the waves, they can head directly to the large bathhouse to wash off the sand and sweat. The indescribable feeling of relief has attracted many repeat visitors. The sand bath is a hot spring therapy that has a history of over 300 years and has long been favored by visitors traveling from afar. In recent years, it has also gained recognition in the medical field, not only providing physical comfort but also having detoxifying effects and helping to regulate the autonomic nervous system. This has drawn an increasing number of travelers who come specifically for this experience.
