About Ikedaya Anbei Shoten
Experience the charm of Toyama Pharmaceutical in stores that still preserve the traditional "zamai" selling method.
Details
Since starting as a wholesaler of Chinese and Japanese medicinal herb seeds in 1936, the company has manufactured and sold the popular gastrointestinal medicine from the Edo period, "Echizen Hanhondan," along with traditional Japanese medicines and herbs. To this day, they continue the practice of "Zamai," where professional pharmacists listen to each individual's account and prepare herbal medicine based on personal symptoms, constitution, and physical condition.
Inside the store, there is a rare golden sign and ancient pharmaceutical tools that were actually used, providing a glimpse into the history of Toyama Pharmaceuticals. Additionally, visitors can experience the traditional method of making pills for free and enjoy health-beneficial medicinal cuisine at the attached restaurant.
The history of Toyama Pharmaceuticals dates back to the Edo period. The second lord of the Toyama domain, Maeda Masaharu, who was also a herbal researcher, often carried "Hanhondan" with him. One day, after giving Hanhondan to a daimyō suffering from stomach pain, the illness disappeared. Those who witnessed this spread the news, and it became widely known. Subsequently, each generation of lords made great efforts to support the development of "Toyama Pharmaceuticals." Toyama adopted a unique selling method called "Ouyaku," delivering medicines nationwide, which established its current status as "Yaku no Toyama" (Pharmaceuticals of Toyama).
