About Inokashira Onshi Park (井之頭恩賜公園)
With a history of a hundred years, it is the first park in Japan to be bestowed by the Imperial family.
Details
Inaugurated in 1917 (Taisho 6), Inokashira Park (井之頭恩賜公園) spans across Musashino City and Mitaka City in Tokyo. It is Japan's first public park bestowed by the imperial family and celebrated its centennial in 2017, boasting a long history.
Covering approximately 380,000 square meters, which is about the size of nine Tokyo Domes, the park is divided into four areas: Inokashira Pond area, Gotenyama, Nishi-en, and the Second Park. It includes a baseball field, a boating area, and is located near the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka (三鷹の森ジブリ美術館), making it a popular spot for walking, exercising, and sightseeing.
Inokashira Pond, which extends east to west, originally had multiple spring outlets and is known alongside Zenpukuji Pond (善福寺池) and Sambotai Pond (三宝寺池) as one of the "Seven Ponds." It also serves as the source of the Kanda River. Approximately 200 cherry blossom trees bloom along the pond, with around 400 within the entire park, making it one of the "100 Historic Cherry Blossom Sites in Japan." The sight of cherry blossoms extending and blooming above the pond, with petals fluttering on the water's surface in the breeze, showcases a charming scene.
Additionally, the park is home to numerous waterfowl and migratory birds, and a bird sanctuary has been established to protect their habitats, making it a popular destination for birdwatching.
