📝 Introduction
The center of modernization in Japan for iron smelting to manufacture cannons.
📖 Details
The Integrated Hall is a Western-style factory settlement built in Japan during the Meiji era to achieve the goal of a wealthy and powerful nation. The Satsuma domain lord, Shimazu Nariakira, began construction in 1851, using this area as a center for diversified industries such as iron smelting, shipbuilding, spinning, and glass production.
Among these, the facility referred to as the "heart" is the "reflecting furnace," which now serves as the foundation for "Sengan-en." The reflecting furnace is an essential facility for metal refining. It was designed based on Dutch technical documentation to melt iron for cannon production. At that time, charcoal was the primary fuel, and the water essential for the refining process was brought in via waterways from Sengan-en.
In addition to iron production, innovations in spinning, glass, and letterpress printing were also steadily advancing, making this a precious historical site that played an important role in accelerating Japan's modernization.
