About Jien-ji Temple

It offers a stunning view of Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three scenic views.

Details

Alongside Abe Monju-in in Nara Prefecture, Kameoka Monju in Yamagata Prefecture, and Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto City, it is renowned as one of the "Three Monjus of Japan," dedicated to the worship of Monju Bosatsu as its principal deity. Its origins can be traced back to the age of the gods, and it also appears in Sesshu's national treasure "View of Amanohashidate," showcasing its long history. Within its grounds, it includes important cultural properties such as the iron hot water basin and the Tahōtō pagoda, as well as several significant sights worth seeing, including the Sanmon gate known as the "Golden Pavilion" and the Wisdom Wheel lantern. The secret Buddha, Monju Bosatsu, is opened to the public multiple times a year, making it worth a special visit. Additionally, the numerous ema (votive tablets) hanging in the Monju Hall are not to be missed. Through various paintings related to waka poetry, martial arts, and professions, one can feel the historical context of the time. The temple is located next to "Amanohashidate," one of the "Three Scenic Views of Japan," and visitors can leisurely stroll along the pine avenue lined with about 5,000 pine trees. The "Chihō Mochi," specially made by the four tea houses known as Shiken Chaya located in front of Chion-ji Temple, is also a must-try local delicacy.
