JR Mojiko Station is located in the town of "Mojiko," facing the Kanmon Strait, and serves as the starting point of the JR Kagoshima Main Line. The two-story wooden station building, constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style, features a symmetrical exterior design said to be inspired by the image of a "gate," making it a long-loved landmark of Mojiko. The current station building was completed in the 3rd year of the Taisho era (1914). Until the opening of the Kanmon Tunnel, it served as a gateway for rail transport in Kyushu, carrying a steady flow of passengers. In 1988, it became the first railway station building designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. In 2019, a six-year seismic reinforcement project was completed, restoring its former appearance and splendor. In recent years, nearby historical buildings from the Meiji to early Showa periods, such as the "Old Mojiko Mitsui Club" and "Old Mojiko Customs," have been relocated to create the newly developed "Mojiko Nostalgic Area," which has been designed as a retro-style tourist attraction featuring new hotels and art museums. The picturesque streetscape has become particularly popular among young travelers.

The active station building is one of the only two important cultural properties remaining in the country. In 2019, a large-scale preservation and renovation project that took six years was completed. It is a representative building of the "Moji Port Nostalgic Area" and serves as the starting point of a transportation hub.
