About Jutalake

The lake is known as "the clearest and most transparent in Japan," a volcanic crater lake filled with a mysterious aura.

Details

Located in Shiraoi Town, Hokkaido, the circular volcanic crater lake has a circumference of about 8 kilometers, a maximum depth of 147 meters, and an average depth of 104.5 meters, making it one of the deepest lakes in Japan. The lake's water transparency reaches up to 28.3 meters, ranking it as the second purest lake in Japan, only after Lake Mashu in Teshikaga, Hokkaido. In the Ministry of the Environment's water quality survey, it received the top rating in the lake and pond category across Japan, renowned for its exceptionally high transparency. It is generally believed that the lake was formed about 40,000 years ago by the collapse of the summit of Mount Kuttara, with no rivers flowing into it, relying solely on rainwater and groundwater for its water supply. There are few tourist facilities around the lake, and large buses are prohibited to maintain the environment, allowing the area to retain its mysterious and tranquil atmosphere. It takes about 30 minutes by car from the Toratetsu Beach area of Shiraoi Town to reach the lake. Please note that the road is closed from November to late April of the following year. Additionally, the panoramic views of Lake Kuttara can be enjoyed from the Kuttara Lake Fan-shaped Observation Deck and the Noboribetsu Bear Park.
