About Kaikado
An old shop that brings Japan's traditional craft of tea canisters to the world stage.
Details
Founded in the 8th year of the Meiji era (1875), this long-established specialty store for tea canisters has its origins in the first-generation owner's use of tinplate imported from England to create round canisters, marking the beginning of the 開化堂 (Kaikado) tea canister. For about 150 years since then, Kaikado has consistently adhered to the tradition of handcrafting high-quality tea canisters.
When the lid is placed on the opening of the canister, it closes with a satisfying "hiss," demonstrating the excellent airtightness of the Kaikado tea canister, which protects various ingredients from moisture. Each canister is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, and it is said that its precise functionality remains unchanged even after a century of use.
The materials used include tinplate, copper, and brass, which have the characteristic of becoming more beautiful in color and texture with prolonged use and handling. The tea canisters can also be repaired, allowing for long-term use.
Not only for tea leaves, but they can also be used to store coffee beans, black tea leaves, pasta, and other moisture-sensitive foods. The canisters can be utilized according to individual needs.
