⛩️ Kameido Katori Shrine

📝 Introduction

One of the Tokyo shrines dedicated to the god of sports promotion, the Tokyo Bissho Shrine.

📖 Details

Kameido Katori Shrine, located in Tokyo, was established in the year 665 AD. It is said that the politician Fujiwara no Kamatari passed through this area during the reign of Emperor Tenji. To pray for a safe journey, he offered a battle sword to Katori Daijin and founded this shrine. During the Tengyō era (938-947 AD), the envoy Taira no Tada Yoshikata was commissioned to quell the rebellion of Taira no Masakado. Before his expedition, he visited the shrine to pray for victory in battle, and upon returning after successfully suppressing the rebellion, he dedicated the bow and arrows he used to the shrine, naming them "Katsuya" (Victory Arrows). Despite the passage of over a thousand years, the shrine still retains the tradition of holding the "Katsuya Matsuri" (Victory Arrow Festival) every May. Due to the shrine's veneration by famous warriors such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu, many martial artists regard Katori Daijin as their ancestral deity. Today, Kameido Katori Shrine is considered the "God of Sports Promotion," attracting many athletes and those seeking victory to worship.
