⛩️ Takachiho Shrine

📝 Introduction

An ancient shrine where traditional Kagura dances are held every night.

📖 Details

In the distant year of 1900, an ancient shrine was established during the reign of Emperor Suinin. The enshrined deities are "Takachiho no Kami" and "Jissha Daimyojin." During the Tenkyo era (938–947), it gained widespread faith among the people as the chief deity of "Takachiho Village's 88 Shrines." The traditional "Takachiho Night Kagura," performed every night of the year, is also famous far and wide. "Takachiho Night Kagura" is an ancient dance that has been passed down through generations and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of the country. Every night from 8 PM to 9 PM, four dances are performed from the original thirty-three types of Kagura. Within the shrine grounds, there are several notable sights, including the "Husband and Wife Cedars," which are two cedar trees that have grown from the same root, the "Guardian Stone" used at the time of the shrine's founding, and the "Chichibu Cedar," which is 800 years old and was personally planted by Hatakeyama Shigetada when he came to pay his respects instead of Minamoto no Yoritomo.
