⛩️ Miyajidake Shrine

📝 Introduction

Kyushu has a long history of shrines. The massive "Three Japanese Firsts" are a must-see!

📖 Details

Miyajidake Shrine, located in Fukutsu City, between Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City, is the head shrine of all "Miyajidake Shrines" across the country. It was established approximately 1,700 years ago and enshrines the main deity, Empress Jingu. According to the "Nihon Shoki" and "Kojiki," Empress Jingu would pray for good fortune at the summit of this mountain before her expeditions, which led to her being revered as the "God of Good Fortune for All Victories" over the years. The shrine grounds feature the "Miyajidake Kofun," the largest horizontal stone chamber tomb in Japan, which dates back about 300 years. Numerous artifacts adorned with gold were discovered within, with 20 of them designated as national treasures. Additionally, there are items symbolizing the prosperity and wealth of the ruling Azumi clan at that time, earning it the title of "Underground Shosoin." The most notable attractions at Miyajidake Shrine are the "Three Japanese Firsts." The first is the "Oshimenawa," a massive sacred rope measuring 2.6 meters in diameter, 11 meters long, and weighing 3 tons; the second is the "Odaiko," a drum with a diameter of 2.2 meters made from an entire cowhide. It is struck at midnight on New Year's Day, and the sound is said to carry up to 2 kilometers; finally, there is the "O-suzu," a 450-kilogram bronze bell. All three items were donated by worshippers. Additionally, there is the recently popular "Path of Light." This path extends straight from the shrine's approach to the distant setting sun, resembling a "Path of Light" connecting Miyajidake to the Western Pure Land, attracting many visitors eager to witness this miraculous and beautiful scenery. This sight is only visible twice a year, around February 20 and October 20, and can only be appreciated under suitable weather conditions, creating a dreamlike view.
