Details
"Shimo-dori Arcade" is a shopping street that runs north to south through the center of Kumamoto City along the Tōmachi-suji. It is conveniently located near tram and bus transfer stations, making it easy to access from JR Kumamoto Station. You can also walk to Kumamoto Castle, a symbol of Kumamoto and one of Japan's three great castles. The area is bustling with both locals and tourists, making it a vibrant commercial district at all hours.
The arcade consists of four shopping streets starting from the north: Shintenmachi, 2nd Street, 3rd Street, and 4th Street. It stretches 511 meters in length, with a width of 15 meters and a height of 16 meters, making it one of the largest shopping streets in Kyushu. Here, you can find "COCOSA," a commercial facility that brings together several brands making their debut in Kyushu and Kumamoto, along with a variety of dining options from cafes to local cuisine. The shopping street features approximately 170 different types of stores.
The shopping street is also frequently used for various events. From late February to early March, the "Higo Hina Matsuri" is held, where the arcade is adorned with doll figurines. In November, there is the "Higo Temari Matsuri," a festival showcasing Kumamoto's traditional culture with Higo temari (decorative handballs) swaying in the wind, among other festive activities.
