About Kanazawa City Nishi Chaya Museum
You can visit the museum that showcases the life of the writer 島田清次郎 (Shimada Seijirō) and the tea room from his time.
Details
Standing at the corner of "Nishi Chaya Street," one of the "Kanazawa San Chaya Street," the historically rich museum is a reconstructed building on the site of the former teahouse "Kichimiro," where the famous Taisho era writer Shimada Kiyoshiro lived during his childhood. It later became the setting for Shimada's best-selling autobiographical novel "Chijō."
The first floor displays precious materials and explanations about Shimada's works, allowing visitors to understand the tumultuous life of Shimada, who passed away at the young age of 31. Ascending to the second floor, visitors find a tatami room with bright red walls, showcasing shamisen, taiko drums, and gold folding screens. Additionally, the luxurious tea room of that time has been recreated, immersing visitors in the atmosphere of the Taisho era.
The museum is staffed by Kanazawa tourism volunteer "Maidosan (まいどさん)," and if the timing is right, visitors can tour Nishi Chaya Street with the volunteer without needing a reservation.
