About Karuizawa New Art Museum

Attracting the attention of fans both domestically and internationally, the museum boasts a stylish appearance.

Details

The museum, transformed from a commercial facility, opened anew in 2012. Its design, inspired by a larch forest, features white columns and a glass curtain wall, created by architect Rikuo Nishimura. The first floor of the museum is free to enter and includes a gallery, a museum shop, and a café, making it easy to enjoy and appreciate the artworks. The exhibited pieces include works by contemporary Japanese artists, art groups, and international artists, broadly responding to the expectations of fans both in Japan and around the world, as well as hosting many innovative special exhibitions. The museum also features a café, known for its dishes made from freshly picked wild vegetables of the day and handmade pasta. Additionally, the museum can serve as a wedding venue, and it includes a small chapel designed by architect Kengo Kuma and contemporary artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, named "Birch and Moss Forest with a Gentle Breeze." It is recommended to participate in the chapel tour, which is held twice daily with a limit of 10 participants each time (on a first-come, first-served basis).
