Yufuin is a famous hot spring resort in Oita Prefecture, and Kinrin Lake is one of the most popular tourist attractions here. This lake, located at the foot of Mount Yufu, was once known as "Gakushita Pond." In 1884, the Japanese Confucian scholar "Mouri Kuusou" was moved by the sight of fish swimming in the lake, their scales shimmering with golden light under the setting sun, and thus named the lake "Kinrin Lake."
The clear water and hot springs continuously bubbling from the lakebed keep the water temperature high throughout the year. Therefore, every autumn and winter morning when the temperature drops, steam rises gently from the lake's surface, creating a dreamlike scene shrouded in morning mist.
Kinrin Lake has a circumference of about 400 meters, and there is a well-maintained walking path along the lakeside that is very easy to walk on. Visitors can stroll around the lake while enjoying the sight of fish and water birds swimming in the lake. Additionally, the torii gate of Tenso Shrine stands by the lake, adding a mysterious atmosphere to the surface of the water. Tenso Shrine is a shrine located next to Kinrin Lake. Kinrin Lake offers different natural landscapes throughout the year, but visiting during the autumn foliage season allows for an even more enchanting view.
