🗺️ Kitano Tenmangu北野天満宮

Kitano Tenmangu is an ancient shrine with a history of over a thousand years since its establishment in 947 (the first year of the Tenryaku era) during the mid-Heian period. The main deity enshrined here is Sugawara no Michizane, and it serves as the head shrine for the 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines across the country. It is known as the birthplace of the Tenjin faith and is commonly referred to by the nicknames "Kitano Tenjin-san" and "Kitano-san." Due to its dedication to Sugawara no Michizane, an outstanding scholar and politician of the Heian period who is revered as the "God of Learning," it is a popular place for students from all over the country to come and pray for success in their exams. The shrine buildings, including the main hall and worship hall dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, are the oldest examples of the Hachido style (Gongen-zukuri) in Japan. The current structures were commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1607 (the 12th year of the Keicho era) and retain the splendid style of the Momoyama period, making them a precious architectural heritage that has been designated as a national treasure. The Sankomon gate, located between the tower gate and the worship hall, is also built in the Momoyama style and is not only an important cultural property of the country but also a well-known landmark within the shrine. The birthday of Sugawara no Michizane (June 25) and his death anniversary (February 25) mark the origin of the monthly shrine market held on the 25th of each month. Numerous stalls line both sides of the approach to the shrine, attracting many worshippers and creating a lively atmosphere. After sunset, 350 stone lanterns and 250 hanging lanterns illuminate the entire shrine, presenting a dreamlike ambiance that is strikingly different from the daytime. Additionally, Kitano Tenmangu is a nationally renowned plum blossom viewing spot. During the plum blossom season, around 1,500 red and white plum trees of 50 varieties related to Sugawara no Michizane bloom across the expansive grounds. The earliest blossoms typically begin to open in mid-December, with flowers gradually blooming until the end of March. *Note: The blooming period of the plum blossoms varies each year, so it is recommended to check the official website before visiting.

The shrine designated as a national treasure is a precious relic of shrine architecture. The iconic Sankōmon gate is designated as an important cultural property by the state. A market is held on the 25th of each month, related to Sugawara no Michizane. It is a nationally renowned plum blossom viewing spot.
