About Kitayama Park (北山公園)
A natural park surrounded by green mountains and clear water, a famous spot for irises.
Details
Located in the western part of Tokyo, at the border with Saitama Prefecture, Higashimurayama City is famous for its beautiful natural scenery, with parks and green spaces scattered throughout the area. Among these is Kitayama Park, a natural park set against the backdrop of the Chichibu Mountains and the Hakone Mountains, selected as one of the New Tokyo Hundred Views.
This city is also a premier location for flower irises in the Kanto region. From early to mid-June, around 600 varieties and 8,000 plants, totaling up to 100,000 blooms of irises, come into full bloom. The irises, dripping with dew and elegantly blossoming, are known as “color wizards” due to their rich variety of colors. The “Higashimurayama Iris Festival,” held during the blooming season, features performances, temporary shops, and nighttime illuminations, attracting a large number of flower viewers every year, creating a lively atmosphere. A must-see highlight is the park's unique variety, "Kitayama Otome."
In addition to irises, the park also features hydrangeas and lotus flowers; come autumn, the cluster amaryllis bloom in competition, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal flowers. The ponds and lawns in the park are also home to many wild birds, making it an excellent place for bird watching.
