About Kobe Kitano Ijinkan
Stand on the hill overlooking the sea and feel the exotic charm of the neighborhood.
Details
Kobe Kitano Ijinkan is a foreigner residential area that formed after the opening of Kobe Port in 1868. Located on a hill with a view of the sea, it features a unique street landscape where Western-style mansions and traditional Japanese houses blend together. To this day, approximately 30 Western-style buildings remain from that era, with 16 of them open to the public.
Each building in the district boasts a distinctive design style. There is the iconic "Kazamidori no Yakata" (Wind Vane House), the elegantly pale green "Moegino Yakata" (Moe Green House), and the "Uroko no Ie" (Scales House), which features an exterior made of about 3,000 natural slate tiles resembling fish scales. Here, visitors can not only admire a variety of beautiful, exotic buildings and learn about the lives of foreigners in Kobe at that time, but also enjoy panoramic views of the city from above.
At Kobe Ijinkan, there are also many interesting activities to experience. You can visit "Yamate 8-Ban Kan" and feel the sensation of sitting in the "Satan's Chair," which is said to grant wishes to those who sit in it. You can create a "one-of-a-kind perfume" at "Hana no Ie Oranda Kan" (Fragrant House Dutch Pavilion), or head to the "Kobe Illusion Art Incredulous Consulate" to take mysterious and fun photos using visual illusions. Kobe Kitano Ijinkan, resembling a theme park, is perfect for leisurely strolls and exploration.
