About Kokura Castle
Within walking distance of JR Kokura Station. The only castle in Fukuoka Prefecture with a keep, also known for its cherry blossom viewing spots.
Details
Kokura Castle was built by Hosokawa Tadaoki over a period of seven years starting in 1602. Hosokawa Tadaoki entered the castle due to his achievements in the Battle of Sekigahara. Later, the castle became the residence of the Ogasawara clan, but a large fire in 1866 partially destroyed the castle, leaving only the stone walls. After the war, the tenshu (main keep) was reconstructed due to strong demands from the citizens.
The first floor of the tenshu features an impressive theater where visitors can learn about the castle's history spanning over 400 years, as well as its development as a gateway connecting Honshu and Kyushu. Additionally, the second floor displays historical materials related to the feudal lords. The third floor introduces the mysterious life of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro, focusing on the famous duel that took place on Ganryū Island in the Kanmon Straits.
Nearby, there is a restored garden that was once the lower residence of the Ogasawara clan, as well as the "Kokura Castle Garden," which recreates a typical samurai academy from the Edo period.
Surrounding Kokura Castle are several attractions, including the "Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Museum," dedicated to the writer born in Kokura; areas for local products and dining; the "Castle Terrace," which provides tourist information; and the large commercial facility "Kitakyushu Riverside Walk." This area is well-developed as a park and serves as a daily recreational space for citizens, especially in spring when it becomes a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, attracting many visitors.
