About Koza Gate Street (胡差通)
A tourist street market exuding a European and American atmosphere.
Details
Koza Gate Street (胡差通) is a street that starts at the entrance of the Kadena Air Base, extending outward into the central area of Okinawa City. It is lined with many shops targeting foreign tourists, as well as exotic stores run by foreigners. After World War II, the U.S. military developed the area, which was formerly known as "Kūkō-dō" (空港通).
The local culture is characterized by a deep influence from Western culture, seamlessly blended with Okinawa's own traditions and customs. Clothing stores and grocery shops stand out particularly, along with Live Houses where visitors can enjoy live band performances and traditional Okinawan music. Other attractions include a plaza that hosts music events, "Koza Music Town" with its attached shops, and the "Okinawa City Post-War Cultural Materials Exhibition Hall," which displays numerous war-related materials.
During the 1970s and 1980s, several shops catering to foreigners opened, and it remains a bustling street frequented by many foreign tourists today. The colorful shop signs and vibrant murals have become popular photo spots. Just strolling along the street allows one to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of traveling abroad.
