🗺️ Kunimi no Oka (Kunimi Hill)国見ヶ丘

Takachiho Town in Miyazaki Prefecture is a place that frequently appears in Japanese mythology. The hill of Kunimi, at an elevation of 513 meters, is renowned for its magnificent views in all directions. According to legend, Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, a grandson of Emperor Jimmu, passed through this area while ruling Kyushu and saw the fortune of the nation from the hilltop, which is how the place got its name. From the observation deck, one can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. To the west are the Aso Five Mountains and the outer rim of Aso, known as the "Nirvana Statue of Aso" because its shape resembles the reclining Buddha. To the east lies the Takachiho Basin, with Mount Obumo to the north and Mount Futagami to the south, along with the surrounding peaks. Additionally, Kunimi Hill is a famous spot for viewing sea of clouds. From mid-September to late November, under clear, windless mornings, and on cold days with significant temperature differences from the previous day, sea of clouds often appears, creating a breathtaking scene where the majestic mountains and the Takachiho Basin are covered in a blanket of clouds. The observation deck features a wooden swing, allowing visitors to relax and swing while enjoying the view. There are also statues of Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto that recreate scenes from Japanese mythology, providing a moment of tranquility. Nearby, there is a bus stop, making it easy to access by taking a route bus.
