The "Shimanami Kaido" connects Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture on Honshu with Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku. This road stretches between the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, with the southernmost island named Oshima. The Kurushima Strait between this Oshima and Shikoku is widely known for being one of Japan's three major tidal currents. The rapid currents and complex topography create the famous "whirlpools" of the Kurushima Strait.
