About Kushiro City Red-Crowned Crane Nature Park
A special place where you can see the original appearance of the Red-crowned Crane (丹頂鶴).
Details
Established in 1958, this park was created to protect and breed the national special natural monument, the Japanese Crane (丹頂鶴, Tancho). It is renowned for its excellent breeding techniques and has successfully artificially incubated the once-endangered Japanese Crane.
The cranes are raised in open-air enclosures that resemble their natural habitat, allowing visitors to observe the lives of several Japanese Cranes up close. The breeding season for the cranes is from May to June. If you're lucky, you might see the chicks covered in soft brown down feathers. With a bit of luck, you may also witness the adult Japanese Cranes caring for their chicks.
Inside the facility, there are photo displays introducing knowledge about Japanese Cranes, as well as a shop selling souvenirs. Additionally, there is an area with windows for observing the cranes, where visitors can leisurely watch their ecology, making it highly recommended.
It is said that Japanese Cranes born in the park sometimes return to visit from the wild. These cranes have become accustomed to humans and will not flee, but they may peck if you get too close. Please do not approach too closely when observing the cranes; instead, enjoy watching them quietly.
