Kushiro in Hokkaido is home to Japan's largest wetland, covering a total area of 28,788 hectares, including the surrounding hilly terrain. The Kushiro Wetland preserves a large amount of pristine natural ecology and is Japan's first registered international important wetland under the Ramsar Convention, as well as being designated a national natural monument. In spring, flowers and grasses sprout; in summer, greenery flourishes; in autumn, the leaves turn red; and in winter, snow scenes appear, showcasing the distinct beauty of each season throughout the year. The area is inhabited by wildlife such as the Hokkaido red fox and Ezo deer, and with a bit of luck, you might even encounter the Japanese crane (丹頂鶴) or the white-tailed eagle (白尾海鵰). There are several boardwalks around the wetland, where you might have the chance to observe animals in their natural activities. Additionally, there are multiple observation points such as the Hosooka Observation Deck and the Kushiro Wetland Observation Deck, where you can fully enjoy the beautiful scenery of the wetland. Nearby, there are several facilities related to the wetland. The "Wakoto Visitor Center" provides rich information about wetland plants and animals, while the "Lake Toro Arukotto Ecological Museum Center" focuses on water themes, explaining and displaying the ecology of wetland plants through three-dimensional models. Kushiro Wetlands is the largest wetland in Japan, so it is recommended to carefully plan your itinerary before departure. The center of the wetlands is designated as a national natural monument, and some areas are off-limits. Please adhere to local regulations. You can observe the changing scenery of plants with the seasons.
