About Kyoto Kamo River
The streets along the banks of the river are a symbolic landscape of Kyoto.
Details
The Kamo River in Kyoto is also known as "Kamo-gawa" or "Kamo River." It originates near "Tachikikyo," flows through "Kyoto City," and merges into "Katsura River" at "Toba." The area along the lower reaches of the Kamo River, known as "Shijo," is bordered by "Gion" to the east and the bustling "Kawaramachi" to the west. It is not only the commercial center of Kyoto but also a representative scenic spot of the city.
The riverbanks of the Kamo River are a popular spot for locals to spend their leisure time. True to its name, various species of ducks such as mallards, spot-billed ducks, and pintails can be seen, along with herons and cormorants among other wild birds. It is quite rare to find a river in such a lively urban area where one can glimpse the presence of wild birds.
From Nijo to Gojo along the west bank of the Kamo River, "yuka" (deck seating) is set up from May to September. This practice, which dates back to the early Edo period, has a long history. Visitors can enjoy meals or drinks while feeling the cool breeze by the riverside, and popular establishments often fill up quickly with reservations. Although the operating hours are mainly during the cooler evenings, many places also open during the day in the pleasant months of May, June, and September.
Highlights
Although it is located in the city center, it is home to various wild bird species. The Kamogawa Park, known as "Kamogawa," is a recreational area for citizens, and it is also nice to walk from here to Shijo. The section from Sanjo Bridge to Shichijo Bridge is called the "Flower Corridor," which is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season (on the east side of the Kamogawa). Generally, reservations for the riverside seating will not be canceled even in case of rain, but it is still best to consult with the store in advance.
