Kyoto's Shijo Minami-za is said to be the oldest theater in Japan. Established in the early Edo period, it began operations as one of the seven theaters officially permitted by the Tokugawa shogunate in the Shijo area, known as the birthplace of Kabuki. Over the long years, generations of Kabuki actors have showcased their exquisite skills on this stage, promoting and passing down the art of Kabuki to this day. Shijo Minami-za primarily features Kabuki performances, hosting a variety of shows throughout the year. Among them, the most famous is the "Gigei Kangei" performance held every December. In recent years, the "Minami-za Super Kabuki," which integrates modern technology into Kabuki performances, has also gained considerable popularity. The Super Kabuki works, created in collaboration with the "VOCALOID" virtual singer Hatsune Miku, utilize the latest ICT technology to provide interactive experiences, such as audience members waving pen-shaped flashlights, and have received high praise and popularity.
