About Maebashi Tōshōgū
There are many blessings! A shrine dedicated to General Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Details
The shrine, built in 1624 in Katsuyama, Echizen (now Fukui Prefecture), is dedicated to the main deity, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who founded the Edo Shogunate. In 1871, it was relocated to its current location in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. It also enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of safe childbirth, among others, providing protection in various aspects.
This shrine has a unique custom. Those who wish to purify themselves or remove misfortune can float paper figures representing humans or vehicles in the sacred river called "Harukawa," which is believed to wash away sins or impurities. Additionally, it features Japan's first purification area specifically for automobiles, attracting many visitors who come to pray for safe travels.
There is also a notable replica of the "Mitake no Yari," regarded as one of Japan's three famous spears. Influenced by the popularity of Japanese swords in games, it draws numerous fans who come to pay homage, making it a precious exhibit that history enthusiasts should not miss.
After visiting, you can take a break at the café located in the inner grounds, enjoying a leisurely time in a tranquil environment.
