Takachiho Gorge is famous as a nationally designated scenic spot and natural monument. Over many years, volcanic rocks ejected from Mount Aso have eroded to form a unique columnar jointed valley with a series of columnar cliffs. A representative attraction of Takachiho Gorge is the Manai Falls, which has been selected as one of the "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan." The scene of water cascading from the natural park "Onokoro Pond" down a cliff about 17 meters high into Takachiho Gorge resembles a graceful white serpent. According to mythology, when the heavenly deities descended, a god named Amanokumon descended to draw water from the heavenly Manai, which later turned into a spring that flowed down. Visitors can overlook the waterfall from the bridge at the entrance of Takachiho Gorge or from the Takimi-dai viewpoint along the trail. It is highly recommended to rent a boat to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the gorge. Each boat can accommodate three people, with a fee ranging from 4,100 to 5,100 yen for 30 minutes. Viewing the waterfall and the columnar jointed cliffs from such a close distance is quite breathtaking. Additionally, there are night illuminations held during the summer.
