About Miho Shrine
The historic shrine features a beautiful main hall, which is a unique architectural style rarely seen across the country.
Details
Miho Shrine has a long history, with its name recorded in the "Izumo no Kuni Fudoki," written in the 5th year of Tenpyo (733). The main deities enshrined are Miho Tsukihime no Mikoto, the goddess who governs the abundant harvest of grains and safe childbirth, and Ebisu, the deity responsible for maritime safety and prosperous commerce. It serves as the head shrine of all Ebisu shrines across the country and has been deeply revered by people since ancient times.
The architectural style of the main hall is known as "Miho-zukuri," characterized by two connected buildings that resemble two birds spreading their wings, earning it the nickname "Hiyoku Taisha-zukuri." The current main hall was rebuilt in 1813 and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of the country.
Ebisu loves musical instruments and is thus revered as the god of music. The shrine houses many precious musical instruments, including Japan's oldest music box and a large taiko drum (not open for public viewing). Additionally, the worship hall is designed to produce excellent acoustic effects and is often used for hosting奉納演奏 (honorary performances) and other events.
Located on the front side of the Shimane Peninsula, the area features beautiful bays and the preserved Edo period stone-paved road "Aoi Stone Path," allowing visitors to enjoy nostalgic scenery.
