🗺️ Mikasa Park三笠公園
About Mikasa Park
A park where you can admire historically significant warships and coastal scenery.
Details
Mikasa Park is located adjacent to the U.S. Navy Yokosuka Base, facing Yokosuka New Port, and has been selected as one of the "100 Best Urban Parks in Japan." Inside the park, there are monuments such as a stone tablet that plays the "Yokosuka" suite at specific times and installations where visitors can listen to the sound of the waves.
In the central plaza, there is the memorial ship "Mikasa," which played a crucial role in the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War and contributed to Japan's victory. The ship is open to the public for visits. Inside, there are rich maritime-related exhibits, and visitors can board the ship to explore its interior (for a fee). The ship and the statue of Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō, who commanded the Combined Fleet, are among the most popular photo spots in the park.
From the gently sloping grassy plaza, one can overlook the famous leisure spot, Sarushima (Monkey Island), and on clear days, even see the Bōsō Peninsula. There are ferry services to Sarushima from the nearby dock. The best viewing period for the Oshima cherry blossoms along the "Seseragi (せせらぎ) Path" is from late March to early April, and the special steam locomotive-style water tank that can store 100 tons of water is also a must-see highlight.
