About Miyama Folk Museum
Through rich data, this introduces the history of Miyama Town, which preserves historical thatched-roof houses.
Details
The Miyama Folk Museum is located in Kitamura, "Miyama Town," Kyoto, an area that preserves numerous traditional thatched-roof houses. The museum showcases a variety of rich materials that introduce the traditional lifestyle of this region, which has been designated as an important national preservation area for traditional buildings.
The museum consists of three buildings: the main house with a thatched roof, a storage shed, and a warehouse. It originally opened in 1993, utilizing a farmhouse from about 200 years ago as the museum. However, in a fire in 2000, the main house and the granary were unfortunately destroyed. The existing buildings have been reconstructed and restored based on detailed records, using old timber and other materials to faithfully recreate the architectural style and atmosphere of the time. Inside, there are over 200 exhibits, including tools for daily life, agricultural implements, and ancient documents provided by local residents, conveying the way of life of ancient farming households.
Although it is a restored building, it is the only one among nearly 40 thatched-roof houses in "Miyama Thatched Village" that allows visitors to explore the interior. Visitors can closely observe unique architectural styles, such as the attic of the thatched roof.
