About Miyoshikaji Pond
Famous for the works of the renowned Japanese painter Higashiyama Kaii, the lake, as smooth as a mirror, reflects the beautiful scenery of the surrounding seasons by the pond.
Details
Miyashiro Pond is located in the Yatsugatake Mountains at an elevation of 1500 meters in Nagano Prefecture. It is a beautiful and tranquil lake, named after the deer hunting ritual of the Suwa Taisha Shrine. Originally, during the Showa period, Miyashiro Pond was created as a reservoir for agricultural use, with the clear and cold spring water from the Yatsugatake Mountains being heated by sunlight, making it ideal for cultivating rice. Today, the water from Miyashiro Pond is still used by farmers in the Sasa-hara area at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains, and the surrounding lake area is carefully maintained by the local community. Due to its highly acidic water, fish and other organisms cannot survive, which is also the reason for the lake's exceptional transparency.
The surrounding mountains and green trees are reflected on the emerald surface of the water, creating a dreamlike and stunning landscape. The enchanting scenery has inspired many artists and has made Miyashiro Pond widely known as the subject of the famous Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama's representative work, "Green Echo."
The larch forest around the pond presents a vibrant and colorful scene that changes with the seasons. In spring, there is a fresh and dripping green; in summer, a lush deep green; in autumn, golden maple reds; and in winter, a pure white world of ice and snow.
Additionally, the colors of the lake water change continuously with the light, which is quite magical and is one of the characteristics of Miyashiro Pond. Visitors can enjoy a variety of scenic views throughout the day. ※ Please note that entry is prohibited for visitors due to agricultural facilities within the embankment.
