📖 Details
Located on the hillside behind JR Atami Station, the MOA Museum of Art was founded in 1982 by the art collector Okada Mokichi, and it was revitalized after renovations in 2017. The museum has three floors above ground and one basement level, covering a total area of 17,000 square meters, with a focus on Eastern art, including paintings, calligraphy, and crafts, housing approximately 3,500 pieces.
Among the many collections, there are three national treasures, including Ogata Korin's "Red and White Plum Blossoms Folding Screen," Nonomura Ninsei's "Colorful Wisteria Pattern Teapot," and the handscroll "Kanboku Castle." Additionally, there are 67 important cultural properties and 46 important artworks. The museum also features a faithfully recreated tea room related to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the "Golden Tea Room," and an authentic Noh theater with a roof made of cypress bark.
The museum area includes a 70,000 tsubo garden called "Zuiun-kyo," showcasing the natural beauty of the changing seasons with cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and autumn leaves. There is a height difference of 48.5 meters and a distance of 203.5 meters from the entrance to Moore Plaza, equipped with seven interconnected escalators. One of the highlights is a giant kaleidoscope, about 20 meters in diameter and 10 meters high, projected in the circular hall. From both the hall and Moore Plaza, visitors can enjoy breathtaking 180-degree views extending from Izu Oshima and Hatsu Island to the Boso Peninsula and Izu Peninsula.
