🗺️ Nagamachi Yuzenkan

📝 Introduction

Visit, learn, and experience the traditional beauty of Kaga Yuzen.

📖 Details

The Nagamachi Yuzenkan introduces the charm of "Kaga Yuzen," a traditional craft that the Kanazawa region takes pride in. It showcases crafts such as kimonos, noren (fabric dividers), and folding screens, along with various historical materials. There are multiple experiential activities, including a colorful experience using authentic Yuzen dyeing techniques and a dressing experience. The attached shop displays a wide range of Yuzen dye-related products. The authentic hand-painted Yuzen dyeing experience is quite rare nationwide. It does not use stencils or predetermined colors; instead, participants can create their own color schemes while applying techniques like shading with a brush. The completed works are sent to the participants after undergoing traditional processes like steam setting. Additionally, for those who wish to delve deeper into Yuzen dyeing, there are courses available for coloring original patterns, furisode (long-sleeved kimonos), and haori (jackets). Yuzen refers to the technique of "depicting kimono patterns using paste to prevent bleeding." It is said to have been founded by Miyazaki Yuzenzai. The greatest feature of hand-painted Yuzen is the use of "sumi-moku" as the outline for patterns to prevent bleeding, which can be considered the lifeline for outlining beautiful designs. Since the mid-Edo period, under the protection of the cultural promotion policy of the Kaga domain, techniques such as color painting and patterned dyeing have been developed and refined.
