Located by the Arakawa River, Chichibu Nagatoro is a famous destination for water activities. One of the most appealing activities is the "Canoeing Experience" on the Nagatoro Riverboat. Passengers sit in boats operated by skilled boatmen, enjoying the natural monument "Iwadake" and the changing seasonal landscapes while experiencing the thrill of navigating through turbulent waters and drifting on calm river surfaces. The moment when the boatman skillfully steers the small boat downstream through the rapids using only a single pole is particularly exhilarating.
The Nagatoro Riverboat offers three different experience courses: Course A (Chinobashi → Iwadake / approximately 3 kilometers); Course B (Iwadake → Takasago Bridge / approximately 3 kilometers); and the Full Course (Chinobashi → Takasago Bridge). The boarding point is at Chinobashi, upstream in the valley. Since there is a certain distance to the meeting point "Canoeing Headquarters," a shuttle bus is available to take you there, taking about 10 minutes to reach the boarding area. After receiving guidance from the boatman, passengers board the boat and put on life jackets. Once everyone is ready, the adventure begins. In addition to steering the boat, the boatman also serves as a guide, and with two skilled boatmen, the canoeing experience becomes even more thrilling and enjoyable.
As the boat drifts through the rapids, passengers express their amazement, cheer, or smile with delight. At that moment, all members on the boat become a collective, sharing the same journey and fate. The friendships formed naturally bring joy to everyone. The charm of canoeing also lies in the ability to appreciate the diverse natural beauty of the four seasons. Even while sitting on the boat, one can enjoy the sounds and scents of spring, the lush greenery of summer, and the beautiful autumn foliage.
