The only national film institution in Japan dedicated to film preservation, research, and public access; as of March 2022, it has collected over 85,000 film archives. The main facility, located at the Kyobashi headquarters, features two screening rooms, an exhibition room, and a library, serving as a hub for transmitting film and film culture to the future, and hosts a variety of events.
In the screening rooms on the basement level and the second floor of the Kyobashi headquarters, special screening events are held periodically based on various themes such as directors, actors, countries of production, and genres. Following the film screenings, guest talks are often organized in line with the theme of the event. The latest screening information is updated regularly on the official website.
On the seventh floor, the exhibition room displays movie posters, film equipment, and artifacts from notable figures in the film industry. In addition to the permanent exhibition, various themed exhibitions are also held. The fourth floor houses a library where visitors can read books on domestic and international cinema.
