About National Museum of Modern Art
Located in downtown Osaka, it is an art museum primarily showcasing contemporary art.
Details
The National Museum of Art, Osaka opened in 1977, and its building was originally constructed as the "Museum of Fine Arts" during the 1970 World Expo held in Suita City, Osaka. Due to the aging and deterioration of the building, it relocated to its current site in Nakanoshima in the fall of 2004 and built a brand new facility. The new building features a rare fully underground design, with a stylish exterior concept based on "the vitality of bamboo and the development and growth of modern art," showcasing a unique architectural aesthetic.
Focusing on modern art after World War II without limiting itself to specific genres, the museum collects and exhibits various outstanding works from both Japan and abroad. The collection comprises nearly 8,000 pieces. It regularly hosts a variety of special exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, and workshops, and occasionally holds film screenings and other events.
A particular highlight is the multifunctional café "Nakanoshima Muse" located on B1F of the museum. In a spacious environment created by large glass windows, it offers coffee and regular meals, as well as a limited menu that combines with the themes of the exhibitions. It is worth mentioning that visitors can also simply come to this café for consumption.
Highlights
Located in the heart of Osaka, with convenient transportation. The building itself has an artistic feel. After sunset, the illuminated beauty of the architecture is definitely worth seeing. It's also perfectly fine to simply enjoy dining or shopping at the museum's restaurant or store.
