Details
The Nishi Azuma Sky Valley connects the northern shore of Lake Hibara in Fukushima Prefecture with the famous Shirabu Onsen in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, along a scenic road approximately 17.8 kilometers long. This mountain road, which winds through the wild beech forests of Tohoku, offers continuous breathtaking natural beauty, allowing for an exhilarating driving experience. The autumn foliage is particularly enchanting, creating a picturesque landscape outside the window with a blend of crimson, bright yellow, and deep green.
The route crosses mountain ridges and features a series of hairpin turns, so special attention is required while driving. On the southern side of Shirabu Pass lies a well-known spot called "Higobatuyama Nanakurisen," which is favored by driving enthusiasts for its artistic curves.
Along the approximately 45-minute drive, there are several scenic parking areas. From the viewpoint at Shirabu Pass, one can enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery of Urabandai and the view of Lake Hibara below. On clear days, it is even possible to see the Iide Mountain Range and the Asahi Mountain Range in the distance. Some viewpoints also allow for the appreciation of the beauty of the "Akabaki" (Red Waterfall) and "Kurobaki" (Black Waterfall), which cascade down from rough rocky surfaces, as well as the beauty of the valleys. Driving through this stunning landscape, one can leisurely enjoy the rich natural scenery of Tohoku.
