About Nishida Family Garden - Gyokusen-en
Built in the mid-Edo period, it is one of only six "Gyokkan-style" pond-and-corridor gardens in the country.
Details
Located near the famous tourist attraction and one of Japan's three great gardens, "Kenrokuen," this pond-style strolling garden was built in the mid-Edo period, 120 years earlier than Kenrokuen.
This garden, designated as a scenic spot by Ishikawa Prefecture, was constructed over approximately 100 years by the first-generation high-ranking samurai of the Kaga Domain, Wakita Naokatsu, to the fourth generation, Kyubei. The garden consists of the main garden, the west garden, and the east garden, designed based on the landscape paintings of the Southern Song Dynasty monk, Fan Yujian, and is known as the "Yujian style," with only six such gardens in the country. Within the grounds, there are Korean five-needle pines and other plants over 400 years old, allowing visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll while appreciating the beautiful scenery.
At the top of the garden, there is Kanazawa's oldest tea house, "Sasetsutei Tea House," where visitors can enjoy matcha and wagashi (Japanese sweets) while overlooking the garden's landscape (entrance fee 1500 yen). Additionally, if booked three days in advance, visitors can participate in a tea ceremony experience (entrance fee 3000 yen).
Highlights
Built in the mid-Edo period, this pond-style garden has a history that predates Kenrokuen. It was constructed over approximately 100 years by the senior samurai Waki family of the Kaga domain. The garden's design is inspired by the landscape painting created by the Chinese painter Feng Yujian. Visitors can also participate in a tea ceremony experience at Kanazawa's oldest tea house, "Sasetsutei Tea House."
