📝 Introduction

Experience the charm of "Nishijin-ori" through data presentations and visits to artisans' demonstrations.

📖 Details

The Nishijin Textile Center is a cultural facility that introduces and sells Kyoto's traditional industry, "Nishijin-ori." Nishijin-ori refers to a type of pre-dyed patterned textile produced in the northwestern part of Kyoto City, characterized by intricate patterns woven from dyed silk threads. It has been designated as a national traditional craft. Inside the center, visitors can learn about the Nishijin-ori manufacturing process through screens and animated short films, and there are live demonstrations of hand weaving and embroidery by skilled artisans. With prior reservation, visitors can also participate in various experiential activities, which are highly recommended. In addition to a hand weaving experience using a mini loom to create table mats, guests can choose their favorite style from 150 kimono options, which includes dressing services for a kimono experience that allows them to go out in kimono. In July 2021, a new hands-on experience was introduced, allowing visitors to create kaleidoscopes using "kiriko" (a type of Nishijin textile). After exploring the charm of Nishijin-ori, guests can purchase ties on the first floor or various Nishijin-ori accessories on the second floor.
