About Now, the ruins of Guiren City.
The ruins of the San Shan era castle located on a hill at an altitude of about 100 meters.
Details
The castle ruins located on the Motobu Peninsula in the northern part of Okinawa Island are said to have been built in the 13th century, during a time when the Ryukyu Kingdom was divided into three regions: Hokuzan, Chuzan, and Nanzan, known as the "Three Mountains Era." Today, Nakijin Castle served as the residence of the king of Hokuzan. In 2000, it was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site under "Castles and Related Heritage of the Ryukyu Kingdom."
Currently, the castle retains a wall that is approximately 1.5 kilometers long, with the highest point reaching 8 meters. The castle covers an area of about 7.9 hectares, comparable to Shuri Castle. Inside, it consists of 10 enclosures, with stone pathways leading from the main gate to a large garden, where it is said that the main hall and other buildings were located. Situated on a hill at an altitude of 90 to 100 meters, it offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Due to its vast area, it is recommended to first visit the ticket office at the "Nakijin Village Castle Exchange Center" to understand the history and overall layout of the facilities before starting the tour. There are several slopes within the castle, so it is advisable to wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking. The visit takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, and guided tours are available.
