Details
Located next to Kokura Castle in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, this beautiful Japanese garden was rebuilt alongside the samurai residences from the Edo period.
The garden is divided into four areas. The "Shoin Area" features a traditional Japanese residential style with a Shoin-zukuri wooden structure. Centered around a study, it includes spaces such as a tea room and guest rooms, separated by sliding paper doors and fusuma, showcasing the beauty of Japan throughout. The garden view from the engawa (veranda) is picturesque. In autumn, the trees turn vibrant shades of crimson and gold, creating a more enchanting scene.
The "Exhibition Area" focuses on the themes of "Gifts" and "Taste," hosting permanent and special exhibitions related to etiquette. It offers a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of samurai manners, the Japanese spirit of hospitality, and the etiquette deeply rooted in daily life, reflecting traditional Japanese culture.
In the "Experience Area," visitors can participate in a standing tea ceremony (with tables and chairs, reservation required) to experience Japanese tea culture. The nearby gift shop "Shiro Terrace" sells tea utensils such as tea whisks and tea bowls, making it a great place to pick a souvenir from your tea ceremony experience.
