Details

Omuta City in Fukuoka Prefecture prospered due to the Mitsui Coal Mine, which played a central role in the development of the coal industry, making it a town with a long history. The Coal Industry Science Museum located in the city introduces the history of coal mining, from the manual digging era to the mechanized and labor-saving modern coal industry. Visitors can easily understand the history of the coal mining industry that supported the development of modern Japan, and the experience zone is quite rich in content. A special highlight is the simulated tunnel known as the "Dynamic Tunnel," where visitors can experience the working conditions in a 400-meter underground mine. The giant coal-cutting machines and electric locomotives used for transporting coal provide a thrilling experience. In 2015, including assets related to the Mitsui Coal Mine, the site was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the "Meiji Japan Industrial Revolution Heritage: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding, and Coal Mining." The science museum serves as a guiding facility for the region, providing an information area that introduces the World Heritage Site "Meiji Japan Industrial Revolution Heritage" in an easy-to-understand manner. Additionally, there are videos that describe the history and events of the coal mining city of Omuta, featuring testimonies from relevant individuals, as well as films that introduce the industrial heritage that remains in the area and the history of coal mining.
